The record for most expensive domain name ever sold changed hands again in late 2009, when internet marketing firm QuinStreet purchased Insure.com for $16 million.

The world's "most valuable" Internet domain name, sex.com is also the world's priciest domain surprising, sex.com was bought by an offshore holding company in 2006 for a $14 million as per report.
The founder of dating website Match.com, Gary Kremen, bought it in 1994. The world's "most valuable" Internet domain name, sex.com, went up for grabs in July of this year after US-based Escom filed for bankruptcy.

Domain name registrar and reseller Moniker.com said that Porn.com was bought by Detroit-based MXN Ltd, an Internet media and investment business. In May 2007 Porn.com Web domain was sold for $9.5 million.

For over half a decade, Business.com reigned as the world’s most expensive domain name after its 1999 sale for $7.5 million. The domain retained its record until 2006. The company was sold to Yellow Pages publisher RH Donnelly for $345 million in July 2007 business.com.

An online diamond and jewelry retailer Ice.com purchased 'Diamond.com' for a reported $7.5 million in 2006 from Odimo Inc. Diamond.com quite simply sells diamond jewelry.

Beer.com, a search engine for beer, beer brewing, tasting, beer news, history of beer and drinking game was sold for $7 million in 2004. William Fisher, a Web developer from Colorado was the first owner of beer.com domain in 1993 which he sold to generic domain name developer InterneRealEstate.com in 1999 for only $80,000 where Fisher was having 20% stake in the domain name.
Later, one of the world's largest beer company Belgium-based Interbrew bought this domain name for $7.5 million.

The domain Israel.com was bought by a 46-year-old Jewish American, Joel Noel Friedman in 1994. Friedman is believed to have bought the site as he feared it could be misused by someone else. In 2008, he sold the site for $5.88 million. The identity of the new owner was not revealed.

ToysRUs, a retailer beat National A-1 in a hotly-contested auction and purchased Toys.com for $5.1 million In 2009
The Parent Company filed for bankruptcy in December 2008 in the US. Toys.com auction was held after the recent meltdown of The Parent Company.
Everybody else stopped bidding at $3 million, but the toy company and National A-1 Advertising, owners of domains such as free.com, boys.com and divorce.com bid kept bidding until the retailer won.
